Bolkhov City Museum

Bolkhov is a tiny town with a rich history. Bolkhov is the guardian of spirituality and Orthodox culture.

In the Orel region, 55 km from the city of Orel, there is a small town of Bolkhov, founded in the 13th century. Bolkhov is called the chernozem Suzdal.

The city seemed to have frozen in the county environment of the late 19th century - two-story merchant buildings, the number of churches, as then – 26. The Soviet renovation is only in the monument to V.I. Lenin.

By the end of the 19th century, the city became a major shopping center, which attracted many merchants who decided not to build a railway, which in many ways helped preserve the city as a museum city.

Bolkhov's main focus can be on the Transfiguration Cathedral, built in 1841-1851. The temple, which seats about 4,500 people, in the Russian-Byzantine style and mature classicism has a steeple-shaped bell tower, which can be seen from afar. In Soviet times, in the 1930s, the cathedral was closed and abandoned until 2004, when restoration began.

Bolkhov's second most beautiful building is the red–brick bell tower of St. George's Church, 76 meters high. According to legend, the merchant Gubarev built a bell tower in honor of his deceased lover, selling his business. The red and green St. George's Church itself was built in 1740.

The third building is the red and white Trinity Church with a golden dome, built in 1708 on the site of the former Kremlin. The openwork frames of the arched openings, caissons with colorful tiles combined with red brick and white stone make the church a pearl not only of Bolkhov, but also of the entire Orthodox architecture.

Bolkhov is rich not only in church architecture, but also in pre-revolutionary stone and wooden houses.

One of these two-story brick houses, built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, at 47 Lenin Street, houses the Bolkhovsky Museum of Local Lore, which was opened by the artist I.K. Gavrilov in 1918, and previously belonged to the merchant Zhzhenov. At the time of its opening, the museum had about 12,000 museum exhibits, but the Great Patriotic War destroyed all the collections. Immediately after the war, in 1946, the museum was re-established. The museum presents such areas as archaeology, ethnography, and paintings by German, Flemish, and Russian artists of the 12th and 19th centuries. All the collections in the museum are authentic, dating back to the 16th century.
